Originally a term used by trophy hunters in Africa, the “Big Five” described the animals most challenging to shoot and kill: the lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo. However, British photographer Graeme Green has reclaimed the narrative, creating a global “New Big Five” for wildlife photography. In 2021, 50,000 people around the world voted for the five animals they would most like to photograph in the wild. Five animals were crowned the winners: the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.

This week, we are thrilled to announce the publication of “The New Big 5” photography book, which features captivating images of these animals and other at-risk wildlife. The book showcases the work of renowned photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, alongside insightful essays by famous conservationists and activists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu.

The purpose of the book is to celebrate wildlife while also serving as a global call to action on pressing issues impacting wildlife, including habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change. Green, the book’s creator, initially came up with the idea during his assignment in Botswana over a decade ago. He wanted to encourage people to “shoot with a camera, not a gun,” emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation and protection.

Curating the images for the book was a meticulous process that took nearly two years. Green believes that these images are some of the most beautiful and creative ones ever compiled in one book. They highlight the species that are currently at risk of extinction.

The UN reports that nature is declining at an unprecedented rate, with approximately one million animal and plant species facing extinction. The “New Big 5” serves as ambassadors for the challenges faced by wildlife worldwide. It reminds us of what we stand to lose if we don’t take action.

In addition to raising awareness about the threats to wildlife, the book offers potential solutions. Featured essays explore the benefits of rewilding and the crucial role of indigenous communities in conservation efforts. Furthermore, a chapter on endangered species expands on the alarming threat climate change poses to animals beyond the “New Big 5.”

Renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, who wrote the book’s afterword, emphasizes the urgent need for action. She believes that we still have a window of opportunity to heal the damage inflicted on the natural world. Goodall hopes that the mesmerizing photographs in the book will inspire readers to immerse themselves in the captivating worlds of these iconic species and motivate them to contribute to a future where wildlife can flourish for generations to come.
