In the world of wildlife photography, the term “Big Five” originally referred to the most challenging animals to hunt in Africa. However, photographer Graeme Green has reimagined the concept and created a global “New Big Five” for wildlife photography. This new selection, chosen by 50,000 people worldwide, includes the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.

To celebrate and raise awareness about these incredible animals and other at-risk wildlife, Green has published “The New Big 5,” a photography book featuring stunning images captured by legendary photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. The book also includes thought-provoking essays from renowned conservationists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu.

“The New Big 5” serves as a powerful call to action, shedding light on the pressing issues facing wildlife, such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change. Green’s initial inspiration for the project came during his assignment in Botswana, when he realized the importance of encouraging people to “shoot with a camera, not a gun.”

Curating the captivating images for the book was a two-year endeavor involving the work of 144 globally acclaimed wildlife photographers from various regions worldwide. Green believes that these images, collected in one place, showcase the beauty and creativity that can be found in wildlife photography while drawing attention to the species that are at risk of extinction.

With the United Nations reporting an alarming decline in nature and approximately one million animal and plant species facing extinction, the “New Big 5” acts as ambassadors for the conservation of the natural world. The book not only highlights the imminent loss but also offers potential solutions. Featured essays delve into the benefits of rewilding and the crucial role of indigenous communities in conservation efforts.

Furthermore, “The New Big 5” includes a chapter on endangered species, ranging from bees to blue whales, underscoring the dire threat posed by climate change to animals beyond the “New Big 5.” Green emphasizes that the situation is even more severe than depicted and could have included countless additional pictures.

Jane Goodall, a renowned conservationist and the author of the book’s afterword, stresses the urgency for collective action, stating that we have a limited window of time to heal the harm caused to the natural world. She hopes that the striking photos will transport readers into the captivating worlds of these iconic species, inspiring greater involvement in preserving a world where wildlife can thrive for generations to come.

“The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife,” written by Graeme Green and published by Earth Aware Editions, is set for release on April 4, 2023.
