In other news, a Syrian refugee who arrived in Germany in 2015 has won a mayoral election in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Ryyan Alshebl, who ran as an independent candidate, won 55.41% of the votes in the municipality of Ostelsheim. This victory is not only sensational but also represents an example of broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism for the whole of Germany in a conservative, rural area. Alshebl’s win is historic as he is the first man with Syrian roots to run for and win a mayor’s office in Baden-Württemberg.
Despite facing hateful comments during his campaign, Alshebl remained undeterred and focused on promoting his election program door-to-door. His experiences were predominantly positive, although a minority of far-right fringe voters in Ostelsheim did not accept him due to his Syrian roots. However, the majority of Ostelsheim residents have welcomed their incoming mayor with open arms, believing that he is the right man for the job.
The state’s Integration Minister hopes that Alshebl’s victory will inspire more people with a migration history to run for political office. This victory signifies that diversity is a natural part of Baden-Württemberg, showcasing the acceptance and openness of the state.
Alshebl’s journey to Germany was filled with challenges and hardships. Born in Syria, he faced the dilemma of being drafted for military service or leaving the country due to the chaotic war and the rise of ISIS. Like many Syrians, he made the dangerous journey to Europe and eventually settled in Germany.
Since arriving in Germany, Alshebl has worked in the administration of Althengstett town hall for the last seven years. He drew from his experience and made digital access to public administration services one of his priorities during his campaign. As a member of the Green Party and with German citizenship, he is dedicated to making a positive impact on his community.
