In other news, a Syrian refugee who arrived in Germany in 2015 has won a mayoral election in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Ryyan Alshebl, a 29-year-old independent candidate, secured 55.41% of the votes in the municipality of Ostelsheim, defeating two German candidates.
Alshebl’s victory has been celebrated by the locals, who see it as a testament to their open-mindedness and cosmopolitanism. He is the first man with Syrian roots to run for and win a mayor’s office.
