Syrian refugee becomes mayor of German town after escaping war

A talented Syrian refugee who settled in Germany in 2015 has achieved victory in a mayoral election in Baden-Württemberg, a southwestern German state. Ryyan Alshebl, an independent candidate from As Suwayda in Syria, emerged triumphant with 55.41% of the votes in the municipality of Ostelsheim, defeating German candidates Marco Strauss and Mathias Fey.
The 29-year-old was greeted with cheers as he celebrated his win, labeling it as “sensational,” as reported by German local broadcaster SWR. Alshebl’s triumph was seen as a representation of open-mindedness and cosmopolitanism, setting an example for the entire country of Germany.
The first call after his win was to his mother in Syria, who was elated with the news. Alshebl, the first man of Syrian descent to attain a mayor’s office in Baden-Württemberg, will officially assume his duties in June.
