In recent news, Finland’s left-wing Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in the country’s parliamentary election. The opposition right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) has claimed victory in a tightly fought contest. The pro-business NCP is expected to win 48 seats in parliament, narrowly ahead of the nationalist Finns Party with 46 seats and Marin’s Social Democrats with 43 seats.

NCP leader Petteri Orpo has emphasized the party’s commitment to fixing Finland’s economy, and he will have the opportunity to form a coalition to achieve a majority in parliament. Marin’s era as prime minister is expected to come to an end.

Although Marin, the world’s youngest prime minister when she took office in 2019, is seen as a millennial role model by many around the globe, she has faced criticism at home for her partying and the government’s public spending. The NCP, which has led in polls for nearly two years, promises to curb spending and address the rise of public debt.

Orpo has criticized Marin for eroding Finland’s economic resilience, particularly as the country faces the impact of Europe’s energy crisis and increased cost of living. He intends to negotiate with all groups to form a majority in parliament, while Marin has expressed a willingness for her Social Democrats to work with the NCP but not with the Finns Party.

The Finns Party’s primary goals include reducing immigration from developing countries outside the European Union and implementing austerity policies to control deficit spending. The NCP shares a similar stance on the latter issue.

Marin has been notable in her foreign policy actions, particularly her pursuit of NATO membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Finland’s accession to NATO is expected to be approved by all 30 members of the alliance in the coming days.
