Renowned ‘Black is Beautiful’ Movement Photographer, Kwame Brathwaite, Passes Away at 85

In recent news, we were deeply saddened by the passing of Kwame Brathwaite, the pioneering activist and photographer who helped define the aesthetics of the “Black is Beautiful” movement. Brathwaite’s work has seen a resurgent interest from curators, historians, and collectors in recent years.

Born in 1938, Brathwaite was drawn to photography after encountering David Jackson’s haunting photograph of Emmett Till. He honed his craft and developed a darkroom technique that enhanced how Black skin appeared in his photography. Brathwaite photographed jazz legends such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk.

Brathwaite also played a significant role in pushing back against whitewashed beauty standards. He co-founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS), which introduced the concept of the Grandassa Models, celebrating the features of young Black women.

Throughout the years, Brathwaite continued to prioritize the “Black is Beautiful” ethos. He traveled to Africa with the Jackson Five, photographed the historic “Rumble in the Jungle” match, and captured the portraits of music legends like Nina Simone and Bob Marley.

Despite his failing health, Brathwaite’s work continues to be celebrated. His first major institutional retrospective debuted in 2019 and is currently traveling across the country. Additionally, an exhibition titled “Kwame Brathwaite: Things Well Worth Waiting For” is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago.
