In a sea of Israeli flags, Yiftach Golov stands out with a different flag representing a group called “Brother and Sisters in Arms.” Comprised of veterans, including elite forces like Golov, they now consider themselves warriors on a new battlefield: defending Israeli democracy.
Golov, a former member of a special forces reconnaissance unit, used to focus on his studies in biophysics. However, when the protest movement against the Israeli government’s judicial overhaul plan began in January, he joined thousands of veterans and military reservists who have taken up the cause as their new mission.
Some, including elite Air Force reservists, have even gone as far as refusing to train or serve in protest of the government’s plans. Others have become active organizers and demonstrators. The group Brothers and Sisters in Arms recently staged a protest by carrying a figure wrapped in the Israeli flag on a stretcher, symbolizing a wounded comrade.
Though Golov has not refused service, he understands the motivation behind those who have. He believes they are fighting for justice and liberty, reclaiming the values that were lacking in recent decades.
Members of the group, sporting brown shirts with the organization’s logo, are scattered throughout the protests. They use the skills they learned in the military to organize and mobilize the demonstrations, driven by their dedication to a larger cause.
The pressure exerted by Israel’s respected veterans has been seen as crucial in influencing change. Last week, after sustained protests and the largest general strike in Israeli history, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a pause in the legislation, allowing time for negotiations with the opposition.
However, the protests continue, with large numbers of people taking to the streets. Last Saturday’s demonstration in Tel Aviv attracted an estimated 150,000 people. Protesters believe the pause is merely a stalling tactic, and they’re determined to keep fighting until real change is achieved.
Netanyahu defends the overhaul as necessary and criticizes those who refuse to train or serve in the military in protest. But the protesters remain unconvinced, adamant that they will only cease their actions when they are certain that Israel will remain a functional democratic country.
