Originally used to describe the most challenging animals to hunt in Africa, the “Big Five” has now been reimagined by British photographer Graeme Green. He has created a global “New Big Five” for wildlife photography, based on the animals that people would most like to photograph or see photographed in the wild. The five winners are the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.
In his book, “The New Big 5,” Green showcases stunning images of these animals and other at-risk wildlife from renowned photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. The book also features essays from famous conservationists and activists, including Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu, highlighting the urgent need for action on issues impacting wildlife, such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.
Green’s project aims to shift the focus from hunting animals to capturing their beauty through photography. It serves as a call to action, urging people to appreciate and protect the wildlife they love. The book includes the work of 144 globally renowned wildlife photographers, showcasing their creative and awe-inspiring images.
