NASA selects four astronauts for historic moon mission after 50 years

The astronauts set to lead the first crewed moon mission since five decades have been revealed, marking the commencement of their training for the groundbreaking Artemis II lunar flyby scheduled for takeoff in November 2024.
NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency are the chosen astronauts for this momentous mission.
Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot from Baltimore, Maryland, has a prior spaceflight experience to the International Space Station and will serve as the mission’s commander.
Hansen, a fighter pilot from London, Ontario, is the first Canadian set to travel to deep space. Glover, a naval aviator, has an impressive aviation and military background and has already been to space as part of the SpaceX Crew-1 team.
Koch, an electrical engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and has participated in multiple spacewalks.
Artemis II follows the successful Artemis I uncrewed test mission and is expected to launch in 2024. The mission will go beyond the moon and return to Earth within about 10 days.
This mission will pave the way for Artemis III, aimed to land the first woman and person of color on the moon. NASA is working on developing the necessary technology for this mission, targeting a launch date in 2025.
The crew for Artemis II was chosen with a focus on diversity, marking a significant departure from the all-White male lineups of past missions. The team is excited and honored to be part of such a monumental endeavor and looks forward to future missions to Mars.
