In other exciting news, the astronauts who will helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades have been revealed. NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, will begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby in November 2024.

Reid Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the commander of the Artemis II mission. Jeremy Hansen, a fighter pilot and the first Canadian to be put in charge of training for a new class of NASA astronauts, will be the first Canadian to travel to deep space. Victor Glover, a naval aviator who recently piloted SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, expressed his enthusiasm for humanity’s journey to Mars.

Christina Koch, a veteran of six spacewalks and the record holder for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, will also join the mission. Her experience and expertise as an electrical engineer will be invaluable.

The Artemis II mission, which will build upon the success of the Artemis I test mission, is expected to take off in November 2024. The crew members will launch atop a NASA-developed Space Launch System rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission will last approximately 10 days and will take the crew beyond the moon, potentially further than any human has traveled in history.

After circling the moon, the spacecraft will return to Earth for a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean. This mission will pave the way for the Artemis III mission, which aims to put the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface. NASA is targeting a 2025 launch date for Artemis III, with the goal of establishing a permanent lunar outpost.
