Most Desired Animals for Photography Captured

In 2021, a global poll of 50,000 individuals voted for the top five animals they would want to photograph, or see photographed, in the wild. The crowned winners were the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.

Recently, “The New Big 5” photography book has been published, showcasing images of these animals and other endangered wildlife. The book features works from renowned photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, along with essays from conservationists such as Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu, highlighting critical wildlife issues like habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.

Green’s initiative aims to raise awareness about wildlife conservation, urging people to capture images with a camera instead of a gun. The book curates images from 144 globally acclaimed wildlife photographers spanning across countries like Ecuador and India, reflecting nearly two years of curation.

In a world where nature is rapidly declining and over a million plant and animal species are facing extinction, the “New Big 5” serve as ambassadors for wildlife preservation. While showcasing the beauty of endangered species, the book also explores potential solutions like rewilding and the involvement of indigenous communities in conservation efforts.

Accompanied by a chapter on endangered species beyond the “New Big 5,” including bees and blue whales, the book sheds light on the severe impact of climate change on wildlife. With contributions from conservationist Jane Goodall, the book serves as a call to action to heal the harm inflicted on the natural world by taking immediate steps towards conservation.

“The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project for Endangered Wildlife,” authored by Graeme Green and published by Earth Aware Editions, is set to launch on April 4, 2023.
