Originally used to describe Africa’s most challenging animals to hunt, the “Big Five” has now been reimagined by British photographer Graeme Green. He has created a global “New Big Five” of wildlife photography, showcasing the most iconic and endangered animals in the world. Through a global voting process, 50,000 people selected their top five animals they would love to photograph in the wild, resulting in the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger taking the top spots.

To celebrate this momentous achievement, “The New Big 5” photography book has been published. This stunning book features captivating images of these animals, as well as other at-risk wildlife, captured by renowned photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. Additionally, essays from esteemed conservationists and activists, including Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu, provide valuable insights into the urgent issues impacting wildlife, such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.

Green’s inspiration for this project came during his time in Botswana, where he realized the power of photography in creating awareness and appreciation for wildlife. He wanted to shift the focus from hunting animals to capturing their beauty with a camera, inviting people to reflect on the species they love and those in need of protection.

Curating the images for the book was a meticulous two-year process, involving 144 globally renowned wildlife photographers from around the world. The result is a collection of breathtaking and thought-provoking images that highlight the species at risk of extinction.

According to the UN, our planet is experiencing an unprecedented decline in nature, with approximately one million animal and plant species facing extinction. The “New Big 5” serves as ambassadors for the broader issues affecting the natural world. Each animal represents a call to action.

“The New Big 5” not only serves as a reminder of what we stand to lose but also offers potential solutions. The featured essays delve into topics such as rewilding and the vital role of indigenous communities in conservation efforts.

Furthermore, the book includes a chapter on endangered species, extending beyond the “New Big 5” to shed light on the alarming threats posed by climate change to various animals. Green emphasizes that the situation is dire, and the book only scratches the surface of the crisis.

Jane Goodall, a renowned conservationist and author of the book’s afterword, emphasizes the importance of taking immediate action to heal the harm inflicted on the natural world. She hopes that the captivating photos will immerse readers in the captivating worlds of these iconic species, inspiring them to get involved in preserving wildlife for future generations.
