Four Astronauts Chosen by NASA for Historic Crewed Moon Mission after Five Decades

In recent news, the astronauts who will helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades have been revealed. The quartet, including NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, will begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby scheduled for November 2024.
Reid Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the commander of the Artemis II mission. Wiseman, who has previously completed a spaceflight to the International Space Station, brings a wealth of experience to the team.
Jeremy Hansen, a fighter pilot from Canada, will be the first Canadian to travel to deep space. He was selected by the Canadian Space Agency for astronaut training in 2009 and has become the first Canadian to be put in charge of training for a new class of NASA astronauts.
Victor Glover, a naval aviator who piloted the second crewed flight of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, expressed excitement about the mission. Glover brings extensive military and flight experience, having logged 3,000 flight hours in over 40 aircraft.
Christina Koch, known for her record-breaking spacewalks, will join the mission. She holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and has a background in electrical engineering. Koch’s experience and resilience, including a year at the South Pole, make her well-prepared for the intensity of a moon mission.
The Artemis II mission will build upon the success of Artemis I, an uncrewed test mission that sent NASA’s Orion capsule on a 1.4 million-mile voyage around the moon. Artemis II will take off in November 2024 and will send the crew out beyond the moon, potentially breaking records for the furthest distance traveled by a human.
