In the depths of the northern Pacific Ocean, scientists from the University of Western Australia and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology recently filmed the deepest fish ever recorded by sea robots. They captured footage of a young snailfish cruising at a depth of 8,336 meters, just above the seabed. This breakthrough in deep-sea exploration is a result of the ongoing 10-year study into the deepest fish populations in the world.

This particular snailfish, a member of the Liparidae family, is believed to be a juvenile. It was found alongside other crustaceans on the seabed of the Izu-Ogasawara trench. The researchers also physically caught two other specimens at a depth of 8,022 meters, setting a new record for the deepest catch ever made.
