In exciting news, scientists from the University of Western Australia and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology have captured footage of the deepest fish ever filmed. A young snailfish was found cruising at a depth of 8,336 meters, just above the seabed, during a probe into the abyss of the northern Pacific Ocean.

The scientists used sea robots to film the snailfish in deep trenches off Japan. Along with recording the deepest snailfish, the scientists also physically caught two other specimens at a depth of 8,022 meters, setting another record for the deepest catch.

This discovery is significant as it provides insight into how far this particular type of fish will descend in the ocean. Snailfish are usually found in shallow water, but some have been found to survive at extreme depths.

During their two-month survey, the scientists used automatic sea robots equipped with high-resolution cameras to explore three trenches at varying depths. One video showed the deepest snailfish calmly hovering alongside other crustaceans on the seabed, while another clip showed a colony of fish and crustaceans feeding on bait tied to an undersea robot.

The images of the captured snailfish provide a rare glimpse into the unique features that help these deep sea species survive in extreme environments. They have tiny eyes, a translucent body, and lack a swim bladder, which allows them to navigate the depths more easily.

The Pacific Ocean is particularly vibrant due to its warm southern current and abundant marine life, which provides a good source of food for bottom feeders like the snailfish.
