According to a source familiar with the matter, the Chinese spy balloon that transited the US earlier this year was able to capture imagery and collect signals intelligence from US military sites. The balloon was able to transmit information back to Beijing in real time, raising concerns about the intelligence it may have gathered.

However, the US intelligence community is not overly concerned about the information gathered by the balloon, as it is not much more sophisticated than what Chinese satellites are able to collect. The US government was able to protect sensitive sites and censor signals before the balloon could pick them up.

The FBI is still examining the balloon, but officials have already gained additional information about how the device worked, including the algorithms used for its software and its power source.

The incident further escalated tensions between the US and China, including the postponement of a diplomatic visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to China. The surveillance program, which includes a fleet of similar balloons, is believed to be operated from the small Chinese province of Hainan.

While China claims that the balloon was just a weather balloon thrown off course, the US suspects that it was deliberately maneuvered into the continental US by the Chinese government. Once over Montana, the balloon appeared to loiter over sensitive sites in an attempt to collect intelligence.
